So this wonderfully gloomy Presidents day was what I consider my first real All Grain Brew Day. Yes Yes, I have done a few all ready but this one I really went thru all the motions. I got my strike water to temp and used wonderful gravity to flow it into my Mash Tun. I then “Doughed In” the 16lbs of grains, leaving the rye for last, to float on top of the bed. I set up m ghetto 3 tier system so I could sparge. Sadly the sparge arm I made over the weekend was a failure with this set up. so i resorted to the tube floating on the grains. It was a slow sparge (almost 2 hours)but i managed to get m 6 gallons out of it. The first run off measured in at a 1.090 specific gravity. The boil went great except that my hop bag holder was too tall for the muslin bags I was using. I ended up having to tie a bag to it and tie it to the keg handle. My home made 50′ immersion wort chiller got the wort down to temp in less than an hour. The Final Gravity was 1.080 just shy of the 1.085 that was the goal. I transferred the wort to the carboy, which was a slow process as well, I think the valve got clogged with hop sludge. Once transferred over I let it sit for about 2 hours. I then aerated it for about 45 seconds. Dropped in the washed yeast slurry and shook the carboy for an additional 45 seconds. I’m excited see how this will turn out.
